The banners of treachery have been raised,

وآيةُ الإحسانِ منسوخَةً

قد أسقِطَت من صُحُفِ الدَهرِ

The verse of benevolence has been abrogated,

And the verse of benevolence, abrogated,

struck from the pages of time.

لا تطلُبِ الخيرَ ولا ترجُهُ

فإنّ هذي دولةُ الشّرِّ

فإنّ هذي دولةُ الشّرِّ

Seek no good, and do not hope for it,

Do not seek goodness, nor hope for it,

for this is the reign of evil.

سمعتُ بالحرِّ ولم ألقَهُ

يا طولَ أشواقي إلى الحُرِّ

I have heard tell of the noble freeman, but never met him—

I have heard of the noble man, but have not met him.
