Separation has made me a target for doom.
Separation has made me a target for death.
May God grant no profit to separation’s bargain!
May God grant no profit to separation's bargain.
قَدindeed طالَhas grown long يَوميmy day وَلَيلَتيand my night بِهُمُbecause of them
لَمّاhad not yet يَزالاthe two cease to be بِهِمin their company قَصيرَينِshort (both)
My day and my night have grown long in yearning for them,
Indeed, my day and my night have grown long because of them,
though in their company both had always been short.
though in their company neither had ceased to be short.
كانَwas قَليلاًbrief لَدَيَّto me مَكثُهُماtheir stay (both)
فَكُنتُso I used to أَدعوهُماcall them both الجَديدَينِthe two new ones
The span of the two used to seem brief to me,
Their stay seemed brief to me,
so I called them “the Two New Ones.”
so I used to call them 'the two new ones.'
فَطالَthen grew long بُعدَduring the absence of الحَبيبِthe beloved لَبثُهُماtheir stay (both)
فَصِرتُso I came to أَدعوهُماcall them both عَتيقَينِtwo old ones
With the beloved far away, their lingering lengthened,
Then, in the beloved's absence, their stay grew long,
and I came to call them “the Two Ancient Ones.”
so I came to call them 'two old ones.'
