صَيَّرَنيmade me البَينُseparation عُرضَةَa target for الحَينِdeath
لاmay … not أَربَحَmake profitable اللَهُGod صَفقَةَthe bargain of البَينِseparation
Separation has made me a target for death.
Separation has made me prone to melancholy,
May God make separation's bargain profitless.
May God not profit the deal of separation.
قَدindeed طالَhas grown long يَوميmy day وَلَيلَتيand my night بِهُمُbecause of them
لَمّاnot yet يَزالاthe two cease to be بِهِمin their company قَصيرَينِshort (both)
My day and my night have grown long because of them,
My day and night are long because of them,
yet in their company both have remained brief.
Still short, alas, their stay will ever be!
كانَwas قَليلاًshort لَدَيَّwith me مَكثُهُماtheir stay (both)
فَكُنتُso I used to أَدعوهُماI call them both الجَديدَينِthe two new ones
Their stay with me used to be short,
Brief was their sojourn, to my mind, before,
so I would call them “the two new ones.”
I wished that day and night might newer be.
فَطالَthen grew long بُعدَin the absence of الحَبيبِthe beloved لَبثُهُماtheir stay (both)
فَصِرتُso I came to أَدعوهُماI call them both عَتيقَينِtwo old ones
Then, in the beloved's absence, their stay grew long,
But now the absent dear one's long-drawn absence
so I came to call them “two old ones.”
Has made me wish that day and night were old.
