ياO عَلَيماًlearned فيin اِدعاءٍclaiming
يا عَلَيماً في اِدعاءٍ
وَجَهولاًand ignorant فيin اِمتِحانِtesting
وَجَهولاً في اِمتِحانِ
O learned man—by your own claim—
O you, learned in your claims,
yet deeply ignorant when put to the test;
And ignorant when put to the test;
وَفَقيراًand poor وَهُوَand he is مُثرٍwealthy
وَفَقيراً وَهُوَ مُثرٍ
وَبَعيداًand distant وَهوَand he is دانِnear
وَبَعيداً وَهوَ دانِ
poor, though wealthy,
And poor, though you are wealthy,
and far removed, though near;
And distant, though you are near;
وَوَضيعاًand lowly فيin فُؤادٍa heart
وَوَضيعاً في فُؤادٍ
وَرَفيعاًand lofty فيin عَيانِplain sight
وَرَفيعاً في عَيانِ
base at heart,
And lowly in the heart,
yet lofty in outward show;
And lofty to the eye;
أَنتَyou كَالمَصلوبِlike the crucified man يَعلوrises high
أَنتَ كَالمَصلوبِ يَعلو
وَهوَand he is مُنَحَطُّlowly المَكانِthe station
وَهوَ مُنَحَطُّ المَكانِ
you are like a crucified man, raised on high,
You are like a crucified man, raised aloft,
though lowly is his station.
Though he is low in station.
