ما مَرَّ بي يَومٌ وَلا لَيلَةٌ

دونَ ثَناءٍ حَسَنٍ أَغنُمُه

No day or night has passed me by

No day or night passes me by

without good praise that I earn.

Without my gaining some good praise

وَلَيسَ لي في رَقدَتي لَيلَةٌ

وَلَيسَ لي في رَقدَتي لَيلَةٌ

مِن دونِ عِلمٍ نافِعٍ أُحكِمُه

مِن دونِ عِلمٍ نافِعٍ أُحكِمُه

Nor do I spend a night in slumber

And I have no night of sleep

without useful knowledge that I master.

Without gaining useful knowledge that I master

أَزيدُ في عِلمي وَفي حِكمَتي

أَزيدُ في عِلمي وَفي حِكمَتي

وَقيمَةُ الإِنسانِ ما يَعلُمُه

وَقيمَةُ الإِنسانِ ما يَعلُمُه

I add to my knowledge and my wisdom,

I increase in my knowledge and wisdom

and a person's worth is what they know.

And the value of a person is what they know
