ماnot مَرَّpassed بيby me يَومٌa day وَلاnor لَيلَةٌa night
ما مَرَّ بي يَومٌ وَلا لَيلَةٌ
دونَwithout ثَناءٍpraise حَسَنٍgood أَغنُمُهI gain it
دونَ ثَناءٍ حَسَنٍ أَغنُمُه
No day has passed me by, nor any night,
No day or night has passed me by
without my winning worthy praise.

وَلَيسَand there is not ليfor me فيin رَقدَتيmy slumber لَيلَةٌa night
وَلَيسَ لي في رَقدَتي لَيلَةٌ
مِنfrom دونِwithout عِلمٍknowledge نافِعٍuseful أُحكِمُهI master it
مِن دونِ عِلمٍ نافِعٍ أُحكِمُه
Nor do I have a single night of sleep

without mastering some useful knowledge.

أَزيدُI increase فيin عِلميmy knowledge وَفيand in حِكمَتيmy wisdom
أَزيدُ في عِلمي وَفي حِكمَتي
وَقيمَةُand the worth الإِنسانِof a person ماwhat يَعلُمُهhe knows it
وَقيمَةُ الإِنسانِ ما يَعلُمُه
I add to my learning and my wisdom,
I increase my knowledge and my wisdom;
and a person's worth is what they know.
