    My two friends, there is no treasure but a good deed,

    And no good deed can be done unless dirhams are at hand.

    وهُنّ إذا ما ساعَدَتها صوارِمُ

    They are the white coins that turn back white swords, though no blades themselves;

    And when they aid those swords, they too are keen blades.

    And oh, how often swords come as judges

    Against you, then the coins come as judges over them.

    فهُنّ صغارٌ في العيون أعاظِمُ

    They resemble the stars of night in action and form;

    For they are small to the eye, yet immense.

    They rise when calamities clash,

    Then lay low every one of them that stands.

    ومُؤثِرُها إلاّ على الحَمدِ عالِمُ

    So he who withholds them, but not from rightful claims, is discerning;

    And he who prefers them, but not over praise, is wise.

    فهُنّ لجُرحِ الحادثاتِ مراهِمُ

    So set aside dirhams for the wound calamities inflict;

    For they are salves for the wound calamities inflict.

    فإنَّ بها جنّاً وهُنَّ تمائِمُ

    And use them as charms for your needs, banishing their unruliness;

    For those needs harbor jinn, and the coins are amulets.

    Through them, affliction is repelled and wishes attained,

    And eminence is won and noble deeds are built.
