    My two friends, the only treasure is an act of kindness,

    and no kindness is possible without dirhams.

    وهُنّ إذا ما ساعَدَتها صوارِمُ

    They are white coins that turn back white blades, though no blades themselves;

    and those blades are keen when the coins support them.

    And oh, how often swords come as judges

    against you, then the coins arrive as judges over them.

    They resemble the stars of night in action and form:

    for they are small to the eye, yet mighty.

    They rise when calamities clash,

    and lay low whatever stands among them.

    ومُؤثِرُها إلاّ على الحَمدِ عالِمُ

    So whoever withholds them, but not from what is right, is discerning;

    and whoever prizes them above all but praise is wise.

    So prepare dirhams for misfortune's wound,

    for they are salves for misfortune's wound.

    And charm your needs with them; you will banish their unruliness,

    for those needs harbor jinn, and the coins are amulets.

    With them affliction is warded off and wishes attained,

    and eminence is gained and noble deeds are built.
