My riches are the riches of my soul, and my wealth is my contentment.
My wealth is the richness of my soul and contentment,
And my treasure is my learning, and my garb is my chastity.
My treasure is my morals, my attire is my chastity.

And my pride is my Islam, and my stored treasure is my trustworthiness.
My pride is my Islam, my provision is my honesty,
And my army is my poems, and my sword is my tongue.
My army is my poetry, my sword is my tongue.
وَليand I have عَزَماتٌfirm resolves كَالسُيوفِlike swords قَواضِباًkeen-cutting

إِذاwhen عَنَّarises خَطبٌa calamity وَالحُتوفُand deadly fates قَواضِياpassing sentence
And I have resolves like keen-edged swords,
I have resolves like shining blades,
When calamity arises and deadly fates pass sentence.
Whenever difficulties arise and calamities strike,
وَتَغشىand assail صُدورَthe breasts of النائِباتِcalamities صُدورُهاtheir breasts
كَماjust as غِشِيَتassailed سُمرُbrown العَواليtall lances التَراقِياcollarbones
And their breasts assail the breasts of calamities,
And they cover the breasts of the helpless,
As tall, brown lances have assailed collarbones.
As the summit's afterglow covered the towering mountains.
أَلاtake heed لاlet not يَذُمَّblame الدَهرَTime مَنwhoever كانَis عاجِزاًincapable
وَلاand let not يَعذِلِreproach الأَقدارَthe fates مَنwhoever كانَis وانِياindolent
Take heed: let no incapable man blame Time,
Beware, do not blame fate if you are incapable,
Nor let the indolent reproach the fates.
Nor rebuke destiny if you are frail.
فَمَنfor whoever لَمhas not تُبَلِّغهُbrought him to المَعالِيَthe heights نَفسُهُhis own soul
فَغَيرُthen not جَديرٍworthy أَنto يَنالَattain المَعالِياthe heights
For he whose own soul has not brought him to the heights
He whose soul does not spur him to glory,
Is unworthy of attaining those heights.
Is unworthy to attain glorious heights.
