    Look at a pen whose head is bowed,

    To bring together what is joined and what is divided.

    You see the claw of a fierce lion,

    And the edge of a sharp-bladed, joint-cleaving sword.

    It appears to its beholder with a yellow hue,

    And black tear ducts and a wasted body.

    يَثنيهِ أَسوَدُ مِثلَ طَرفٍ أَكحَلِ

    So the scroll is white, like a radiant cheek;

    A black trace accompanies it, like a kohl-darkened eye.

    فَإِذا نَظَرتَ إِلَيهِ فَاِحذَر وَأمَلِ

    It has apportioned gifts and deaths among humankind;

    So when you look at it, beware—and hope.

    Two desires: a mingling of sweetness with bitterness,

    Like Time, which mixes its honey with colocynth.

    So when its rein moves in your hands,

    Through it you join a hopeful seeker with what he hopes for,

    And the humbled with the honored—and often

    Through it you join the honored with the humbled.
