عارَضتُI raced against فيهِin it النَجمَthe star فَوقَatop مُطَهَّمٍa well-built steed
عارَضتُ فيهِ النَجمَ فَوقَ مُطَهَّمٍ
يَهويswoops لِطَيِّئِهِto traverse it هُوِيِّthe swooping of الأَعقَبِthe male eagle
يَهوي لِطَيِّئِهِ هُوِيِّ الأَعقَبِ
In it I raced the star, astride a well-built steed,
swooping to traverse it as an eagle swoops.
ذاويslender العَسيبِthe tailbone قَصيرُهُshort in it ضافيluxuriant السَبيبِthe tail hair
ذاوي العَسيبِ قَصيرُهُ ضافي السَبيبِ
طَويلُهُlong in it صافيsmooth الأَديمِthe hide مُحَبَّبِdappled
طَويلُهُ صافي الأَديمِ مُحَبَّبِ
Its tailbone slender and short, its tail hair luxuriant,
long, its hide smooth and dappled.
كَالنورِlike blossoms بَينَamid العُشبِthe grass يَبهُرُdazzles حُسنَهُits beauty
كَالنورِ بَينَ العُشبِ يَبهُرُ حُسنَهُ
بَينَamong الجِيادِthe steeds إِذاwhen بَداit appears فيin مَوكِبِa procession
بَينَ الجِيادِ إِذا بَدا في مَوكِبِ
Like blossoms amid the grass, its beauty dazzles
among the steeds when it appears in a procession.
وَتَطيرُand fly أَربَعَةٌfour legs بِهِwith it فيin أَبطُحٍgravelly flats
وَتَطيرُ أَربَعَةٌ بِهِ في أَبطُحٍ
فَكَأَنَّهُso it seems مِنbecause of طولِهاtheir length فيon مَرقَبِa watchtower
فَكَأَنَّهُ مِن طولِها في مَرقَبِ
And four legs fly with it over gravelly flats,
so their length makes it seem perched on a watchtower.
صُمَّsolid الحَوافِرِthe hooves شُرَّبٌdrinkers of صُمَّsolid الصَفاthe rock
صُمَّ الحَوافِرِ شُرَّبٌ صُمَّ الصَفا
مِنهاfrom them الأَهِلَّةَthe crescents فيin الصَفاthe rock وَالصَلبِand the hard ground
مِنها الأَهِلَّةَ في الصَفا وَالصَلبِ
Solid-hoofed, they drink up the hardest rock,
leaving crescents in stone and hardened earth.
وَكَأَنَّand as though غُرَّتَهُits white forehead blaze تُفَضِّضُsilvers وَجهَهُits face
وَكَأَنَّ غُرَّتَهُ تُفَضِّضُ وَجهَهُ
وَالنَقعُand the dust يُذهِبُهُgilds it وَإِنand even though لَمnot يُذهَبِbe gilded
وَالنَقعُ يُذهِبُهُ وَإِن لَم يُذهَبِ
And its white blaze seems to silver its face,
while dust gilds it, though no gilding was applied.
وَكَأَنَّand as though فيin أَكفالِهِits haunches وَتَليلِهِand its neck
وَكَأَنَّ في أَكفالِهِ وَتَليلِهِ
غَسقَdusk النُجومِthe stars فَتَستَطيلُso they stretch out وَتَرتَبيand rise
غَسقَ النُجومِ فَتَستَطيلُ وَتَرتَبي
And in its haunches and neck there seems to be
the dusk of stars, stretching out and rising.
وَكَأَنَّماand as though الأَرساغُthe pasterns ماءٌwater لَمnot يَسِلflowed
وَكَأَنَّما الأَرساغُ ماءٌ لَم يَسِل
وَالجِسمُand the body كَأسُa goblet of مُدامَةٍwine لَمnot يُقطَبِbe mixed
وَالجِسمُ كَأسُ مُدامَةٍ لَم يُقطَبِ
And its pasterns seem like water that has not flowed,
and its body a goblet of unmixed wine.
لَمnot يُطَّلَبbe pursued إِلّاexcept يَفوتُit escapes وَيَطَّلِبand it pursues
لَم يُطَّلَب إِلّا يَفوتُ وَيَطَّلِب
إِلّاexcept يَفوزُit wins فَلَمso it has not يَخِبfailed فيin مَطلَبِa quest
إِلّا يَفوزُ فَلَم يَخِب في مَطلَبِ
It is never pursued without escaping; whenever it pursues,
it wins, and so has never failed in a quest.
وَالعاصِفاتُand the storm winds حَسيرَةٌexhausted وَالبارِقاand the lightning flashes (continued)
وَالعاصِفاتُ حَسيرَةٌ وَالبارِقا
تُplural ending completing 'lightning flashes' أَميرَةٌsovereign فيin شِدَّةِthe fierce charge of المُتَلَهِّبِthe fiery steed
تُ أَميرَةٌ في شِدَّةِ المُتَلَهِّبِ
And the storm winds are spent, and the lightning flashes
are sovereign in the fiery steed's furious charge.
وَكَأَنَّماand as though يَحويencloses مَدارُthe circuit of حِزامِهِits girth
وَكَأَنَّما يَحوي مَدارُ حِزامِهِ
أَحناءَthe curved sides of بَيتٍa tent بِالعَراءِin the open مُطَنَّبِsecured with guy ropes
أَحناءَ بَيتٍ بِالعَراءِ مُطَنَّبِ
And the circuit of its girth seems to enclose
the curved sides of a tent, secured by guy ropes in the open.
