إِذا أَنا لا أَشتاقُ أَرضَ عَشيرَتي

إِذا أَنا لا أَشتاقُ أَرضَ عَشيرَتي

فَلَيسَ مَكاني في النُهى بِمَكينِ

فَلَيسَ مَكاني في النُهى بِمَكينِ

If I do not yearn for the land of my kin,

If I do not long for the land of my clan,

then no firm place is mine among the wise.

Then my standing in reason is not secure.

مِنَ العَقلِ أَن أَشتاقَ أَوَّلَ مَنزِلٍ

مِنَ العَقلِ أَن أَشتاقَ أَوَّلَ مَنزِلٍ

غَنيتُ بِخَفضٍ في ذُراهُ وَلينِ

غَنيتُ بِخَفضٍ في ذُراهُ وَلينِ

It is only reasonable that I should yearn for my first abode,

It is wise to long for the first dwelling

where I lived within its shelter in comfort and ease—

Where I lived in ease and comfort upon its heights,

وَرَوضٍ رَعاهُ بِالأَصائِلِ ناظِري

وَرَوضٍ رَعاهُ بِالأَصائِلِ ناظِري

وَغُصنٍ ثَناهُ بِالغَداةِ يَميني

وَغُصنٍ ثَناهُ بِالغَداةِ يَميني

and for a meadow my eyes tended in the evenings,

And a meadow my gaze grazed upon in the late afternoons,

and a bough my right hand bent down in the morning.

And a branch my right hand bent in the morning.

وَإِنِّيَ لا أَنسى العُهودَ إِذا أَتَت

وَإِنِّيَ لا أَنسى العُهودَ إِذا أَتَت

بَناتُ النَوى دونَ الخَليطِ وَدوني

بَناتُ النَوى دونَ الخَليطِ وَدوني

And I do not forget my pledges when there come

And indeed I do not forget the pledges when there come

the daughters of separation between my companions and me.

إِذا أَنا لَم أَرعَ العُهودَ عَلى النَوى

إِذا أَنا لَم أَرعَ العُهودَ عَلى النَوى

فَلَستَ بِمَأمونٍ وَلا بِأَمينِ

فَلَستَ بِمَأمونٍ وَلا بِأَمينِ

If, though far away, I do not honor those pledges,

If I do not honor the pledges despite separation,

then you are neither one to be trusted nor one who is true.

Then you are neither to be trusted nor trustworthy.
