I was promised golden porridge resembling

The fringes of dawn in the robe of darkness.

You see it, when it appears in darkness,

    Like a steed's mane in a dust-dark hour;

Like a coy beloved wearing safflower-dyed robes,

Who plays coy with the yearning, love-besotted lover.

So when my heart yearned for it,

And the eye of my attention reached toward it,

My hands fell so far short of it that

The syrup seemed suspended in the clouds.

For tall spearpoints bar the way to the ghee,

And the sword's edge bars the way to the fire.

Is that porridge, or Salma's phantom?

For it visits only in dreams.
