I was a guest of عَمراًAmr فَجاءَنيso he came to me بِرَغيفٍwith a loaf
زادَنيadded to me أَكلُهُeating it عَلىon top of الجوعِhunger جوعاhunger
I was Amr’s guest, and he brought me a loaf;
Eating it added hunger to my hunger.
ثُمَّthen وَلّىturned away يَقولُsaying وَهوَwhile he was كَئيبٌdejected
لَهفَgrief نَفسيmy soul عَلىfor الرَغيفِthe loaf أُضيعاit was wasted
Then he turned away, saying dejectedly:
“How my soul grieves for the loaf, now wasted!
كانَit was خَدّاعَةَa great deceiver of الضُيوفِthe guests وَلَكِنand yet
رُبَّماsometimes أَصبَحَbecame الخَدوعُthe deceiver خَديعاdeceived
It was a great deceiver of guests, and yet
Sometimes the deceiver becomes deceived.
كُنتُI had أَنزَلتُهُI placed it مَحَلّاًin a place رَفيعاlofty
فَغَداso it became ذَلِكَthat الرَفيعُthe lofty one وَضيعاlowly
I had set it in a lofty place,
So that lofty one became lowly.
عَجَباًwhat a marvel مِنهُat it إِذwhen أُبيحَwas violated حِماهُits sanctuary
كَيفَhow لَمdid not يَمتَنِعresist وَكانَand it was مَنيعاimpregnable
I marvel at it: when its sanctuary was breached,
How did it not resist, though it was impregnable?”
