صَرَفتُI turned وُدّيmy affection إِلىtoward السودانِthe black people مِنfrom هَجرِHajar
وَماand not اِلتَفَتُّI turned my attention إِلىto رومٍRomans وَلاnor خَزَرِKhazars

And did not care for Rome or Khazaria
أَصبَحتُI have become أَعشَقُI love مِنin وَجهٍa face وَمِنand in بَدَنٍa body
ماwhat يَعشَقُlove الناسُpeople مِنin عَينٍan eye وَمِنand in شَعَرِhair

I came to love a face and body
what people love in eyes and hair.
That people do not love, an eye or hair
فَإِنso if حَسِبتَyou deem سَوادَblackness of الجِلدِthe skin مَنقَصَةًa flaw
فَاِنظُرthen look إِلىat سُفعَةٍa dark patch فيon وَجنَةِthe cheek of القَمَرِthe moon

then look at a dark patch on the moon’s cheek.
Then look upon a radiant full moon
