I gave her as a gift كَالهَدِيِّlike a bride آنِسَةًtame
وَهيَand she سَليلُoffspring النَواشِزِthe wild ones النَفَرِthe skittish ones
I offered her as a gift, tame as a bride,
I gifted her, a companion so charming,
though she is the offspring of wild, skittish birds.
She's of a proud and noble line,
تَلبِسُshe wears سَمّورَةًa sable coat مُشَمَّرَةًtucked up
تَصونُshe protects أَطرافَهاits edges مِنَfrom العَفَرِthe dust
She wears a sable coat, tucked up,
Wearing a spotted, flowing gown,
keeping its edges free of dust.
That guards her limbs from soil and grime,
وَقَدand indeed جَرىflowed المِسكُmusk مِنfrom مَحاجِرِهاher eye sockets
فَضَمَّso it enfolded لَبّاتِهاher upper breast مَعَtogether with الثَغرِthe mouth
And musk has flowed from her eye sockets,
Musk flowed from her cheeks in streams,
enfolding her upper breast together with her mouth.
Embracing her lips so soft and fine,
تَخطُرُshe struts فيin حُلَّةٍa robe مُصَدَّرَةٍadorned at the breast
كَأَنَّas though أَكمامَهاits sleeves مِنَof الحِبَرِstriped fabrics
She struts in a robe adorned at the breast,
She glides in an embroidered dress,
as though its sleeves were of striped brocade.
Its sleeves as if penned in carmine,
وَاِحمَرَّand turned red مِنقارُهاher beak وَمِنخَرُهاand her nostril
تَفَتُّحَthe blossoming الوَردِroses فيin نَدىdew السَحَرِthe predawn hours
And her beak and nostril flushed red,
Red is her beak and nostrils too,
like roses opening in the dew before dawn.
Like roses blooming in the shine,
كَأَنَّهاas though she حينَwhen لَقطُpicking up قُرطُمِهاher safflower seeds
تَضرُبُshe strikes ياقوتَةًa ruby عَلىagainst دُرَرِpearls
When she pecks up her safflower seeds, it is as though
When she takes off her earring,
she strikes a ruby against pearls.
She strikes a ruby on pure white pearls.
