I lament love with tears driven on by anguish,
I lament love with tears led by anxiety,
until they clung to an eyelid—the flood had turned them back.
until they clung to an eyelid, held back by the flood.
فَفيfor in فُؤادِيَmy heart سُبلٌpaths لِلأَسىfor sorrow جُدُدٌnew
فَفي فُؤادِيَ سُبلٌ لِلأَسى جُدُدٌ

وَفي الجُفونِ مَقيلٌ لِلكَرى قَلِقُ
For in my heart are fresh paths for sorrow,
For in my heart are new paths for sorrow,
and in my eyelids sleep has a restless lodging.
and in the eyelids an uneasy resting place for sleep.

وَالعودُ يَقطُرُ ماءً حينَ يَحتَرِقُ
The blaze of my heart made tears pour from my eyes,
My heart’s blaze poured tears from my eye,
and wood drips water when it burns.
and wood drips water when it burns.
