I lament love with tears driven by restlessness,
I complain of passion with tears led by distress,
Until they clung to an eyelid, driven back by the flood.
Until they clung to an eyelid, floods drove them back.
فَفيfor in فُؤادِيَmy heart سُبلٌpaths لِلأَسىfor sorrow جُدُدٌnew
فَفي فُؤادِيَ سُبلٌ لِلأَسى جُدُدٌ
وَفيand in الجُفونِthe eyelids مَقيلٌa resting place لِلكَرىfor sleep قَلِقُuneasy
وَفي الجُفونِ مَقيلٌ لِلكَرى قَلِقُ
For in my heart are new paths for sorrow,
So in my heart are paths for grief ever renewed,
And in the eyelids an uneasy resting place for sleep.
And in the eyes a halting-place for tears unquiet.
لَهيبُthe flame قَلبيmy heart أَفاضَmade flow الدَمعَtears مِنfrom بَصريmy eyes
لَهيبُ قَلبي أَفاضَ الدَمعَ مِن بَصري

وَالعودُ يَقطُرُ ماءً حينَ يَحتَرِقُ
My heart's flame made tears pour from my eyes,
The ardour of my heart poured tears into my eyes,
And wood drips water when it burns.
And the lute drops water when it burns.
