I gave her as a gift كَالهَدِيِّlike a bride آنِسَةًtame
وَهيَand she سَليلُoffspring النَواشِزِthe wild ones النَفَرِthe skittish ones
I gave her as a gift, tame as a bride,
though she is the offspring of the wild and skittish.
تَلبِسُshe wears سَمّورَةًa sable robe مُشَمَّرَةًtucked up
تَصونُshe protects أَطرافَهاits hems مِنَfrom العَفَرِdust
She wears a tucked-up sable robe,
keeping its hems clear of dust.
وَقَدand indeed جَرىflowed المِسكُmusk مِنfrom مَحاجِرِهاher eye sockets
فَضَمَّthen embraced لَبّاتِهاher throat hollows مَعَtogether with الثَغرِthe mouth
And musk has flowed from her eye sockets,
then embraced her throat hollows and mouth together.

كَأَنَّas though أَكمامَهاher sleeves مِنَof الحِبَرِstriped cloth
She struts in a robe adorned at the breast,
as though her sleeves were of striped cloth.

And her beak and nostril reddened,
like roses opening in the dew before dawn.

تَضرُبُshe strikes ياقوتَةًa ruby عَلىagainst دُرَرِpearls
She seems, when pecking up her safflower seeds,
to strike a ruby against pearls.
