تَأَمَّلتُI beheld مِنهاin her غَزالاًa gazelle رَبيباhand-reared
وَبَدراًand a full moon مُنيراًradiant وَغُصناًand a bough رَطيباsupple
I beheld in her a hand-reared gazelle,
I gazed at a doe so gentle,
And a radiant full moon, and a supple bough.
A shining full moon, and fragrant branch.
جَلَتshe revealed لَكَto you عَنfrom خَضلٍdewy واضِحٍgleaming
يَبيتُspends the night سَناهُits radiance عَلَيهاover her رَقيباwatchful
She revealed to you a dewy, gleaming mouth,
She revealed to you from tender sprouts,
Whose radiance keeps watch over her all night.
Their youth upon her keeping watch.
وَهَزَّتand she swayed لَناfor us بِسَراةِon the crest of الكَثيبِthe sand dune
قَضيباًa bough تُفَرِّعُshe raises مِنهُfrom it كَثيباa sand dune
And on the dune’s crest she swayed for us
She waved to us from hilltop high,
A bough from which she raises a sand dune.
A staff from which many branches ply.
عَشِيَّةَon the evening راحَتshe departed وَأَترابُهاand her age-mates
يُقَلِّبنَthey turn لِلهَجرِfor estrangement طَرفاًa gaze مُريباdisquieting
On the evening she departed with her age-mates,
In the eve she went her way,
Casting disquieting glances that bode estrangement.
Her companions all their glances pry.
كَواكِبُstars لَيلٍnight إِذاwhen ماever (emphatic) رَأَتthey see
كَواكِبُstars شَيبٍgray hair تَهاوَتthey tumble down غُروباsetting
Stars of night—whenever they see
Stars of night when they espy,
Stars of gray hair, they tumble down and set.
Stars of gray, begin to die.
وَأَقمارُand moons رَوضٍa garden قَمَرنَthey captured العُقولَminds
وَغُزلانَand gazelles رَملٍsand قَلَبنَthey overturned القُلوباhearts
And garden moons that have captured minds,
Moons of meadows, moons that grace
And gazelles of the sands that have overturned hearts.
The minds and turn all hearts apace.
إِذاwhenever زِدتَهاyou give her more نَظَراًlooking زِدتَنيyou give me more
جَمالاًbeauty بَديعاًwondrous وَشَكلاًand a form غَريباrare
Whenever you gaze at her more, you give me more
If I look more, look more fair,
Wondrous beauty and a rare form.
Lovelier shape and stranger air.
رَحَلنَthey departed العَشِيَّةَat evening مِنfrom ذيDhu (possessor of) الغَضاal-Ghada (ghada trees)
وَخَلَّفنَand they left behind فيهِin it جِمالاًbeauty وَطيباand fragrance
They departed at evening from Dhu al-Ghada,
From fresh youth away they fare,
And left behind there beauty and fragrance.
Leave but beauty and perfume there.
فَلاso do not تَعجَباyou two, marvel أَنthat يَعِبنَthey find fault with المَشيبَgray hair
فَماfor … not عِبنَthey found fault with فيin ذاكَthat إِلّاexcept مَعيباsomething flawed
So do not wonder, you two, that they find fault with gray hair;
So wonder not if gray assail,
For in that they found fault only with what is flawed.
For naught there did but grace avail.
إِذاif كانَis شَيبيmy gray hair بَغيضاًhateful إِلَيَّto me
فَكَيفَthen how يَكونُcan it be إِلَيهاto her حَبيباbeloved
If my gray hair is hateful to me,
If gray to me is loathsome thing,
How, then, could it be beloved to her?
To her how can endearment cling?
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was أَرفُلُI strut in بُردَthe mantle of الشَبابِyouth
قَشيباًfresh and new وَأَرفُلُand I strut in وَشياًbrocade قَشيباfresh and new
And I once strutted in the mantle of youth,
Though I did clad in chill of youth
Fresh and new, and strutted in fresh brocade.
Frisk frolicsome and frisk, forsooth.
إِذاwhen مُلتَyou swayed مُلتَyou swayed قَضيباًa bough رَطيباsupple
وَإِنand if صُلتَyou charged صُلتَyou charged قَضيباًa sword قَضوباkeen-cutting
When you swayed, you swayed like a supple bough;
If you incline, a supple rod,
And if you charged, you charged like a cleaving sword.
If you desist, a rigid clod.
وَخَلِّand leave alone الجُهولِthe fool وَبَغضيand my hatred لَهُfor him
فَإِنّيfor I am لَبيبٌdiscerning أُحِبُّI love اللَبيباthe discerning
And leave the fool—and my hatred of him—alone;
Leave fools to me a hateful crew,
For I am discerning, and I love the discerning.
For wise am I and wisdom woo.
يُصادِفُنيfinds me الضَيفُthe guest طَلقاًcheerful ضَحوكاsmiling
وَإِنeven though كُنتُI was لَمnot أَرَI saw بِدعاًa novelty عَجيباastonishing
The guest finds me cheerful and smiling,
The guest finds me easy, laughing, gay,
Even though I have seen no astonishing novelty.
Though strange I’ve nothing seen or say.
وَأَستَعمِلُand I practice الحُلمَforbearance ماas long as لَمnot أَكُنI have
أَصَبتُI received مِنَof الذُلِّhumiliation فيهِthrough it نَصيباa share
And I practice forbearance, so long as I have not
Patience I use, unless I’ve found
Received through it a share of humiliation.
Some servitude its measure bound.
مِنَof الحُلمِforbearance ضَربٌa kind إِذاif رُمتَهُyou seek it
لَقيتَyou encounter مِنَof الذُلِّhumiliation فيهِin it ضُروباmany kinds
There is a kind of forbearance: if you seek it,
A patience that, when free of slight,
You encounter in it many kinds of humiliation.
From servitude doubles plight.
