    I beheld in her a hand-reared gazelle,

and a radiant full moon, and a supple bough.

She unveiled to you a moist, gleaming mouth,

whose radiance keeps watch over her through the night.

And atop the dune she swayed for us

a bough from which she makes a dune branch out.

One evening she departed with her companions,

turning an unsettling gaze toward estrangement.

Stars of night that, whenever they see

    the stars of gray hair, sink and set;

and moons of a meadow who have captivated minds,

and gazelles of the sands who have overturned hearts.

The more you gaze at her, the more you give me

wondrous beauty and an extraordinary form.

They departed that evening from Dhu al-Ghada,

and left behind there camels and fragrance.

So do not marvel that they find fault with gray hair:

for in that they found fault only with something faulty.

If my gray hair is hateful to me,

then how can it be dear to her?

And once I strutted in the mantle of youth,

fresh and fine, and strutted in fresh brocade.

    وَإِن صُلتَ صُلتَ قَضيباً قَضوبا

    When you sway, you sway like a supple bough;

and if you charge, you charge like a keen-cutting sword.

And leave the fool, and my hatred of him, alone:

for I am discerning, and I love the discerning.

The guest finds me cheerful and quick to laugh,

even though I have seen no astonishing novelty.

And I practice forbearance so long as I have not

incurred in it a share of humiliation.

There is a kind of forbearance which, if you seek it,

you encounter in it many kinds of humiliation.
