إِلىuntil كَمhow long تَستَمِرُّyou persist عَلىin الجَفاءِcoldness
وَلاand not تَرعىyou honor حُقوقَthe rights of الأَصدِقاءِfriends
How long will you persist in cold estrangement,
How long will you persist in coldness,
heedless of the rights of friends?
And fail to honor the rights of friends?
فَمَنso who ليfor me أَنthat أَرىI see لَكَfrom you مِثلَthe like of فِعليmy conduct
فَنُصبِحُso we become فيin الوِدادِaffection عَلىon إِستِواءِequal footing
Who will grant me the sight of deeds from you like mine,
Who can assure me I will see you act as I do,
so that in affection we may stand as equals?
So that we stand as equals in affection?
أَلاtake heed إِنّيindeed I لَأَعرِفُI certainly recognize كُلَّevery شَيءٍthing
سِوىexcept خُلُقِthe virtue of الرِعايَةِcare وَالوَفاءِand fidelity
Indeed, there is nothing I do not know
Indeed, I recognize every trait in you,
except the ways of consideration and fidelity.
Except the virtue of care and fidelity.
عَرَيتَyou are bereft مِنَof الوَفاءِfidelity وَلَيسَand it is not بِدعاًunprecedented
لِأَنَّكَbecause you قَدalready عُريتَhave been stripped مِنَof الحَياءِa sense of shame
You are devoid of fidelity—and that is no wonder,
You are bereft of fidelity, and that is no surprise,
for you have already been stripped of shame.
For you have already been stripped of any sense of shame.
فَإِنso if تَرجِعyou return إِلىto الحُسنىkindness وَإِلّاand if not
فَماthen there is no الإِجداءُbenefit إِلّاexcept فيin التَنائيkeeping apart
If you return to the better way, well and good; if not,
So if you return to kindness, well and good; otherwise,
nothing will avail us but keeping apart.
Then the only benefit lies in keeping apart.
