أَلا إِنَّ أَسبابَ الصَفاءِ تَصَرَّمَت

أَلا إِنَّ أَسبابَ الصَفاءِ تَصَرَّمَت

فَما لِمَوَدّاتِ الرِجالِ صَفاءُ

فَما لِمَوَدّاتِ الرِجالِ صَفاءُ

Behold, the bonds of friendship have been severed;

Behold, the bonds of pure affection have been severed.

men’s affections, then, hold no sincerity.

So there is no sincerity in men's friendships.

وَما لِجَميعِ العالِمينَ رِعايَةً

وَما لِجَميعِ العالِمينَ رِعايَةً

وَما لِجَميعِ العالِمينَ وَفاءُ

وَما لِجَميعِ العالِمينَ وَفاءُ

Among all the people of the world there is no consideration,

And among all the learned there is no regard,

and among all the people of the world there is no faithfulness.

And among all the learned there is no faithfulness.

أَلا إِنَّما آوى وَعَنقاءُ مَغرِبٍ

أَلا إِنَّما آوى وَعَنقاءُ مَغرِبٍ

وَعُرسُ وَإِخوانُ الصَفاءِ سَواءُ

وَعُرسُ وَإِخوانُ الصَفاءِ سَواءُ

Behold, a refuge I may turn to, the Phoenix of the West,

Behold, Āwā and the phoenix of the West,

a wife, and loyal brethren—all are alike.

And ʿUrs and brethren of pure affection are just alike.
