وَإِذاand when شَتَوتُI spend the winter أَمِنتُI am safe from لَسعَةَthe sting of عَقرَبٍa scorpion
كَالنارِlike fire طارَتflew مِنfrom زِنادِthe flint of القادِحِthe fire-striker
And when I spend the winter, I am safe from a scorpion’s sting,
Like fire that flew from the fire-striker’s flint.
قَدalready خِلتُهاI thought it تَمشيit walks بِسَبحَةِwith the prayer beads of عابِدٍa worshipper
كَلّاno لَقَدindeed تَمشيit walks بِصَعدَةِwith the lance of رامِحِa spearman
I thought it walked with a worshipper’s prayer beads;
No—indeed, it walks with a spearman’s lance.
