وَمَرَّand passed بِأَكنافِthrough the outskirts of اللِوىal-Liwā خاطِرُa passing thought of الصِباyouth
وَمَرَّ بِأَكنافِ اللِوى خاطِرُ الصِبا
فَحَرَّضَand so stirred شَوقاًa longing لاnot يَزالُceases يُحَرَّضُis stirred
فَحَرَّضَ شَوقاً لا يَزالُ يُحَرَّضُ
And through al-Liwā’s precincts passed the memory of youth,
And a thought of youth passed through the outskirts of al-Liwā,
and roused a longing that never ceases to be roused,
and stirred a longing that never ceases to be stirred,
بِلَيلٍon a night كَماas تَرنوgazes الغَزالَةُthe gazelle أَسوَدُblack
بِلَيلٍ كَما تَرنو الغَزالَةُ أَسوَدُ
عَلىdespite أَنَّهُthe fact that it is مِنfrom نورِthe light of وَجهِكَyour face أَبيَضُwhite
عَلى أَنَّهُ مِن نورِ وَجهِكَ أَبيَضُ
on a night black as a gazelle’s gazing eye,
on a night as black as a gazelle’s gaze,
though white with the radiance of your face.

كَواكِبُهُits stars زُهرٌbright white وَصُفرٌand yellow كَأَنَّهاas though they were
كَواكِبُهُ زُهرٌ وَصُفرٌ كَأَنَّها
قَبائِعُsword pommels مِنهاamong them مُذَهَّبٌgilded وَمُفَضَّضُand silvered
قَبائِعُ مِنها مُذَهَّبٌ وَمُفَضَّضُ
