وصاحبُand the man of الحاجاتِaims مَنone who يجفوshuns الكرىslumber
ويركبُand braves الهولَterror إذاwhen الجِبسُthe coward التَوَىshrinks back
And the man of purpose is he who shuns slumber,
The one with needs spurns kinship
And braves terror when the coward shrinks back.
And dares ruin when despair twists him
أَرَىI see الفتىthe young man تغرُّهُdeceives him صِحّتهhis health
وإنماyet ... only الصحةُhealth رهنٌa hostage بالضناto wasting illness
I see the young man beguiled by his health,
I see youth fooled by health
Yet health is only a hostage to wasting illness.
Yet health is hostage to thrift
يرجوhe hopes for ليانَease العيشِof living وهوyet it is داؤُهُhis disease
ورُبَّand many a راجhopeful man خافَfeared منfrom حيثُwhere رَجَاhe hoped
He hopes for ease of living, yet it is his disease,
He hopes for an easy life, though it ruins him
And many a hopeful man has found fear where he hoped.
And many hopeful fear where they hoped
قدalready فَضَلَتhave exceeded آمالُهُhis hopes عنbeyond عُمرِهِhis lifespan
فهُنَّso they لاdo not تفنىperish ويُفنِينَyet they destroy الفَتَىthe young man
His hopes have already outstripped his lifespan;
His hopes exceeded his life
So they do not perish, yet they destroy the young man.
So they do not perish, yet slay the youth
بنىhe built الحصونَfortresses حذراًin fear منof العِدَىenemies
وجِسمُهُyet his body مشتمِلٌenclosing علىaround العِدَىenemies
He built fortresses in fear of enemies,
He built fortresses fearing harm
Yet his body harbors enemies.
While his body contains that harm
فيin هذهthese الآمالِhopes ماhow أعجبَهَاastonishing they are
عمارةُthe building of الدنياthe world وآفاتُand the afflictions of الوَرَىmankind
In these hopes—how astonishing they are!—
How strange are these hopes
Lie the building of the world and the afflictions of mankind.
Adorning the world and corrupting souls
يدفعُhe wards off أسبابَthe causes of الأذىharm عنfrom نفسهhimself
ورُبماand sometimes جرhas brought on الأذىharm دفعُwarding off الأذىharm
He keeps the causes of harm away from himself,
He defends himself from causes of woe
And sometimes warding off harm has brought harm.
Yet defending brings woe's cause
يفرحُhe rejoices بالأيامِin the days يمرُرنthey pass بهby him
وإنّماyet ... only هُنَّthey سلاليمُstairways الرَدَىdeath
He rejoices in the days as they pass him by,
He rejoices in passing days
Yet they are only stairways to death.
Which are only steps to decline
يَغمِسُhe plunges فيinto العصيانِdisobedience كفّاًa hand مُلِئَتwas filled
منwith نِعَمٍblessings تكثرُexceeding أعدادَthe number of الحَصَىpebbles
He plunges into sin a hand that was filled
He plunges sin-steeped hands
With blessings exceeding the pebbles in number.
In blessings too many to count
يُعجِبُهُdelights him نَماءُthe growth of ماwhat يملِكُهُhe owns it
وهوyet it is بنقصانِthrough the shortening of الحياةِlife ماas long as نَمَىit grows
The growth of what he owns delights him,
He admires the growth of his wealth
Yet all its growth comes at the cost of life.
While through losing life he grew
ويندبُand he mourns الموتىthe dead وينسىand he forgets نفسَهُhimself
كأنّهas though he were مماfrom what أتوهُthey came to it فيin حِمَىa sanctuary
And he mourns the dead and forgets himself,
He mourns the dead, forgetting himself
As though he were sheltered from what they have met.
As if he were immune to death
لاdo not let يُبطِرَنكَmake you arrogant ماwhat ترىyou see منof نِعَمٍblessings
فعنfor after قليلٍa short while لاnot ترىyou will see ماwhat قدindeed ترىyou see
Do not let the blessings you see make you arrogant,
Let not the blessings you see deceive you
For soon you will no longer see what you now see.
For soon you will see them no more
كأنas though ماwhat يمضيwill pass منof الدنياthis world مضىhas passed
وأنand that ماwhat يأتيis coming منof الموتdeath أتىhas come
As though all that will pass in this world had already passed,
It is as if the past is passed
And the death that is to come had already come.
And the future death has come
فارحلso journey إلىto الأخرىthe hereafter بزادٍwith provisions منof تُقىpiety
فإنماfor ... only الزادُthe provision إلىto الأخرىthe hereafter التُقَىpiety
So journey to the hereafter with provisions of piety,
So depart with provision of piety
For the only provision for the hereafter is piety.
For piety is provision for the final journey
هلis ...? ينفعُof use العيشُlife بغيرِwithout صحَّةٍhealth
أوor تكمُلُbecome complete الصِحّةُhealth إلاexcept بالغِنَىwith wealth
Is life of any use without health,
Is life of use without health?
Or can health be complete except with wealth?
Or health complete without wealth?
