أراكshowed you الهوىlove فيin لحظهاher glance لحظthe gaze of عاتبِone who reproaches
When she bent her gazelle-like neck and turned away,
When the gazelle turned her neck aside
love showed you in her glance a reproachful gaze.
I saw reproach in your glance, though I know not why.
فلمso did not أدرI know ماwhat العتبىamends ولاnor كنتI was مذنباًguilty
سوىexcept أننيthat I مستشعرٌwearing next to the skin ثوبthe robe of تائبِa penitent
So I knew not what amends to make, nor had I sinned,
I am not to blame, though I feel repentant
save that I wore a penitent’s robe next to my skin.
As though I had sinned.

Never has my eye cast a glance at you
I did not even glance at you,
and then turned away without tears streaming.
Yet your eyes brimmed over with tears like stars.

إذاwhen غاضran dry دمعيmy tears عندat بعضsome of المصائبِthe calamities
And indeed, through you I summon sorrow and weeping
And when my own tears flow
when my tears run dry in the face of certain calamities.
At life's troubles, I think of you and grieve anew.
