قالوا اعتلتَ فقلتُ كل
لاno (completing the preceding fragment) إنَّماrather; only اعتلَّfell ill العبادُthe people
لا إنَّما اعتلَّ العبادُ
They said, 'You have fallen ill.' I said, 'By no
means! Rather, the people have fallen ill,
والدينُand religion والدنياand the world لِعِلَّbecause of the illness (fragment)
والدينُ والدنيا لِعِلَّ
تِهِhis (completing 'his illness') وأظلمتِand grew dark البلادُthe lands
تِهِ وأظلمتِ البلادُ
and religion and the world, because of his
illness; and the lands have grown dark.'
