ياO هذهyou, woman كمhow long يكونwill be اللومblame والفَنَدُand reproach
لاdo not تعذليreproach رجلاًa man أثوابُهُhis garments قِدَدُtatters
O woman, how long will blame and senseless fault-finding go on?
O woman, how long will blame and reproach continue?
Do not reproach a man whose clothes hang in tatters.
Do not reproach a man whose garments are in tatters.
إنif أُمسِI spend the evening منفرداًalone فالبحرthen the sea منفردٌalone
والبدرُand the full moon مُنفردٌalone والسيفand the sword منفردُalone
If I pass the evening alone, the sea too stands alone;
If I spend the evening alone, then the sea is alone.
And the full moon stands alone, and the sword stands alone.
And the full moon is alone, and the sword is alone.
إنif كانwas صَرفvicissitudes زمانٍof time عابmarred هيئتهhis appearance
فبينthen between طمريهhis two tattered garments منهof him ضيغمٌa fierce lion أسدُa lion
If time’s reversals have marred his outward form,
If the vicissitudes of time have marred his appearance,
Beneath his two threadbare robes, his very self is a fierce lion—a lion indeed.
Then within his two tattered garments, he is a fierce lion.
