أرى الدهر يجفوني ونفسي عزيزة

أرى الدهر يجفوني ونفسي عزيزة

وليس معي زهد فاسطو على دهري

وليس معي زهد فاسطو على دهري

I see time treating me coldly, though my soul is proud.

I see time treating me harshly though my soul is dear

Nor have I the ascetic detachment to prevail over my fate.

And I have no asceticism to master my fate

وقالوا وراء النهر للرزق مطلبٌ

وقالوا وراء النهر للرزق مطلبٌ

فقلتُ وراء السدِّ خير من الفقر

فقلتُ وراء السدِّ خير من الفقر

And they said, “Beyond the river lies a place to seek sustenance.”

They said across the river lies sustenance

So I replied, “Beyond the barrier is better than poverty.”

I said behind the dam is better than poverty
