تلبَّس للحرب أثوابها

وقال أنا الشاعرُ البحتري
He donned the garments of war,
He donned the garments of war,
and said, “I am the poet al-Buhturi.”
And said, "I am the poet al-Buhturi."
فلمّاthen when رأىhe saw الخيلthe horses قدhad أقبلتapproached
فلمّا رأى الخيل قد أقبلت
إذاlo هوhe فيin سرجهhis saddle قدhad خريshat
إذا هو في سرجه قد خري
But when he saw the cavalry approaching,
Then, when he saw that the horses had approached,
behold—there in his saddle, he had shat himself.
Lo, he had shat in his saddle.
