  1. تلبَّس للحرب أثوابها

    وقال أنا الشاعرُ البحتري

    He donned the garments of war,

    And said, “I am the poet al-Buhturi.”

  2. فلمّا رأى الخيل قد أقبلت

    إذا هو في سرجه قد خري

    But when he saw the cavalry advancing,

    Behold, he had shat in his saddle.
