بَخِلتَyou were miserly برَشحٍwith a trickle مِنfrom كِتابٍa book مُمَزَّقٍtattered
وَقَدand indeed كُنتَyou used to تَسخوgive generously بِالهَوامِيwith flowing rains الهَوامِعِpouring down
You grudged me a trickle from a tattered book,
You were stingy with a scrap from a tattered book
though you once gave freely of flowing, pouring rains.
Though once you were lavish with brilliant flashes
وَدافَعتَنيand you rebuffed me بِالرَدِّwith refusal إِذwhen كُنتُI was سائِلاًasking
وَماand not كُنتُI was لَماwhen سَلتَنيyou asked me بِالمدافِعِone to rebuff you
You rebuffed me with refusal when I asked,
You warded me off with refusal when I asked
though when you asked me, I did not rebuff you.
Though I didn't defend myself when you asked of me
أَعَرتُكَI lent you تَسهيلَFacilitation (title) الفَوائِدِthe Benefits (title) بُرهَةًfor a while
وَأَصبَحتand you became فيconcerning التَرشيحِal-Tarshīḥ (title) ظُلماًunjustly مُنازِعيmy adversary
I lent you Tashīl al-Fawāʾid for a while,
I made profits easy for you for a while
and you unjustly became my adversary over al-Tarshīḥ.
Yet you became unjust in apportioning them
فَليfor I have سَبقُprecedence فَضلٍkindness قَدindeed جُزيتُI was repaid بِضِدِّهِwith its opposite
وَوصلَةِand a bond وُدٍّof affection صِرتَyou became فيهاin it مُقاطِعيone who cuts me off
For I was first to show kindness, yet was repaid with its opposite,
So I have prior merit that was rewarded by its opposite
and to form a bond of affection, which you came to sever with me.
And a bond of love in which you became estranged
وَماand not كُنتَyou were تَدريknow ماwhat الكِتابُthe book وَإِنِّماand it was only
وَشَىdivulged نَحوَكto you الواشيthe tale-bearer بِهِabout it وَهوَand he is خادِعيmy deceiver
You did not know what the book was; it was only
You didn't know what the book was, but rather
the tale-bearer who told you of it—and he deceives me.
The slanderer insinuated it to you, and he is a deceiver
تُنازِعنيurges me النَفسُthe soul اللجوجُobstinate طِلابهseeking it
فَقُلتso I said لَهاto it إِذwhen أَيأسَتنيmade me despair مَطامِعيmy hopes
My obstinate soul urges me to seek it,
My obstinate soul contends with me over seeking it
so I said to it, when my hopes had made me despair:
So I said to it when my hopes despaired of me
إِذاif شافِعيmy intercessor فيهِconcerning it غَداhas become ليfor me مانِعيone who bars me

“If my intercessor for it has become the one who keeps it from me,
If tomorrow my preventer becomes my intercessor for it
then how can I obtain what an intercessor holds?”
How can I attain what is with the intercessor?
