    You begrudged even paper

to a sorrowful soul full of anxiety.

What have you given freely, with which

you have kept me barely alive?

O full moon that has appeared

in the shadows of a night grown dark,

    and O fleeing gazelle

who takes lions captive with his eyes,

    and O swaying branch

to which my heart has clung:

be gentle with one for whom

torment and sleeplessness for your sake are sweet,

    a secret-keeper who never spoke

of you, not once, nor uttered a word.

I have never seen a lover

as sincere in love as I.

You have brought two opposites together:

    fire and water gushing forth.

    So my heart is burning,

    and my eye is drowning.

And I have been this way for some time—

    seven years in succession.

I am content with your conversation

and companionship—whatever is to be had.
