Who will aid me against a young gazelle,

    So extreme in his shunning?

    Easy and gentle in speech,

Elusive, his fruit hard to pluck.

    He acquired abundant learning

    Before the age of maturity.

And afterward he surpassed his companions,

    Outstanding in every art.

Through his learning he strides proudly

In an ample cloak of excellence.

He was indeed fashioned from light—how

    Wondrous is the Maker's handiwork!

So his form is lovelier than

A full moon rising in the night,

And his character is gentler than

    Sweet, fresh, palatable water.

So his crafting of verse has indeed

    Left every craftsman powerless.

    And modest, guarding himself

    From every tempter's prompting.

My love for him does not stray.

Or turns away from me in coldness,

Still I am not one to turn away.

Ah, how lovely the little scorpion

    Upon his cheeks, stinging me,

And the blush upon his cheek

    That came without a dyer!
