When people disagree over a question,
When people disagree about a concept
and it admits only two opposing views,
And it bears no other aspects of contention
فَماso ... not الحَقُthe truth فيهِin it سِوىexcept واحِدٍone
فَما الحَقُ فيهِ سِوى واحِدٍ
وَفكرٍand reflect لتبصِرَهُso you may see it غَيرnot خافhidden
وَفكرٍ لتبصِرَهُ غَير خاف
then the truth in it can only be one;
Then the truth in it is single
and reflect, that you may see it plainly.
Reached only by enlightened comprehension

But if it admits several views, while they offer
And if it bears multiple facets
two opinions based on inconclusive reasoning,
They spoke but two views, neither complete

the truth may emerge in a third,
Yet the truth may reveal itself in a third
and their [unclear term] springs from folly.
While both turned away, bleating like sheep
وَلاand do not تَعتَبِرjudge by كَثرَةَthe number of القائِلينthose speaking

فَهُمfor they are حُمُرٌasses ماnot لَهاthey have مِنany أُكافa pack-saddle
فَهُم حُمُرٌ ما لَها مِن أُكاف
And do not judge by the number of speakers:
Consider not the number of those claiming
for they are asses without pack-saddles.
They are but donkeys without any reins

فَقولُهُم لَم يَزل ذا اِختِلاف
Some of them contradict the others,
Some contradicting others’ very words
so their words remain marked by disagreement.
Discourse from them was never the same

Had they thought deeply, they would have judged fairly,
If they but focused their thoughts for a moment
and their discourse would have been harmonious.
Their words would meet in a choir refrain

And beware of debating with a novice,
Beware discussing with one barely cognizant
a dullard who speaks without fairness.
Who speaks without a sense of restraint
