This Eid has come, but Nudar is away—
Indeed, on this Eid, Nudar is absent,
and her brother too; my heart can find no rest.
And so is her brother; my heart has no rest.
أَدمُعيmy tears تَرتَميfall عَلىupon الخَدِّthe cheek سَكباًin streams

My tears fling themselves down my cheek in torrents,
My tears fall upon my cheek in streams,
while in my heart a fire fiercely burns.
And my heart is ablaze, with fire within it.
صَحِباthey two took along مِنout of ودادِهاlove for her وَسطَthe core of قَلبيmy heart

The two dwell, through my love for her, deep within my heart;
They took my heart's core with them, out of love for her;
at every moment it remembers her.
At every moment it remembers her;

And a brother—good, chaste, and modest—
And a virtuous brother, chaste and modest,
whose branch has flourished and whose lineage is noble.
Whose branch has flourished and whose stock is noble.

The homes have grown desolate without them; they departed,
The dwellings grew desolate without them, and they departed;
and through them the hills and deserts find companionship.
In their company, the hills and wastelands find comfort.

The camels bore beauty away in bearing them—
The camels carried their beauty,
a radiant beauty whose lights shine upon all mankind.
From which lights shine forth for all humankind.

By day, suns from among them shone forth,
Suns shone forth from them by day,
and in their night, moons revealed themselves.
And moons revealed themselves in their night.

The earth grew fragrant with their perfume when
The earth grew fragrant with their scent when
they trod upon it, and its soil became sweet-scented.
They trod upon it, so its soil is richly fragrant.

لَهُمُfor them الذِكرُremembrance of God وَالقُرآنُand the Qur'an شِعارُa watchword
They set out for the Hijaz, intent upon the pilgrimage,
Bound for the Hijaz to make the pilgrimage, they set out;
with remembrance of God and the Qur’an as their emblem.
Remembrance of God and the Qur'an are their watchword.
بَلَغُواthey reached كَعبةَthe Kaaba of الإِلَهِGod وَحَجُّواand made the pilgrimage
فَبِهاso there حُطَّتwere removed عَنهُمfrom them الأَوزارُthe burdens of sin
They reached the Kaaba of God and performed the Hajj,
They reached God's Kaaba and made the pilgrimage,
and there their burdens of sin were cast away.
So there their burdens of sin were lifted from them.
ثُمَthen زارُواthey visited لِلمُصطَفىthe Chosen One's خَيرَthe finest قَبرٍtomb

Then they visited the Chosen One at the best of graves,
Then they visited the finest tomb, al-Mustafa's,
where lies the Chosen, the finest of all creation.
In it lies the best of creation, the Chosen One.
حَنَّyearned قَلبيmy heart لِصالِحٍfor Salih وَلَعَمريand by my life

إِنَّindeed تَرحالهُhis journeying لَفِيهِsurely in it اِعتِبارُa lesson
My heart yearned for Salih—and, by my life,
My heart yearned for Salih, and by my life,
there is surely a lesson in his journey.
Indeed, his journey holds a lesson.
حَجَّhe made the pilgrimage طِفلاًas a child مَعwith أُمِّهِhis mother وَأَبيهِand his father

He made the pilgrimage as a child, with his mother and father,
He made the pilgrimage as a child, with his mother and father;
attaining what no other little child had ever attained.
He attained what children had never attained.
هُمthey أُناسٌpeople حَجُّواthey made the pilgrimage وَزارُواand they visited وفازُواand they succeeded

They are people who made the Hajj, visited, and won salvation;
They are folk who made the pilgrimage, visited, and found success;
destiny aided them in this.
Fate aided them in this.
وَأَناand I الشَيخthe old man أَخَّرتنيheld me back ذُنوبيmy sins

فَعَسىso may it be أَنthat يُسامِحَhe pardons الغَفّارُthe All-Forgiving
But I, an old man, was held back by my sins—
And I, the old man—my sins have held me back;
perhaps the All-Forgiving will pardon me.
So may the All-Forgiving pardon me.
خَلَّفونيthey left me behind وَحديon my own غَريباًa stranger فَريداًsolitary

They left me behind alone, a solitary stranger;
They left me behind, alone, a solitary stranger;
at every moment remembrance fills me with longing.
At every moment, remembrance fills me with longing.

Will I live, I wonder, to behold Hayyan,
Will I live, I wonder, to see Hayyan,
and see Nudar appear before my eyes?
And Nudar appear before my eyes?

The two blossoms of my soul, the two lights of my heart,
The two blossoms of my soul and the two lights of my heart,
my two companions whenever brooding overtakes me.
And my two comforters when thoughts beset me.
فارَقانيthey two left me شَهراًa month وَشَهراًand a month وَشَهراًand a month

ماno لِقَلبيfor my heart عِلىin enduring الفِراقِseparation اِصطِبارُpatience

They have been parted from me a month, then a month, then a month;
They left me for a month, and a month, and a month;
my heart has no power to endure the separation.
My heart has no patience to bear separation.

للأَحبّاءِto the loved ones حَيثُwhere شَطَّis far away المزارُthe place of visitation
O breeze of the east wind, carry my greetings, I pray,
O breeze of the east, do carry my greeting
to my loved ones, however distant the place of visiting.
To my loved ones, whose place of visitation lies far away.
قُلتُI said لِلنَفسِto the soul وَهيَwhile it was ذاتُfull of اِضطّرابunrest

اِستَكِنيbe still فَقَدfor indeed تَقَضّىhas ended السِفارُthe journey
I said to my soul as it trembled in distress,
I said to my soul, which was full of unrest:
“Be still, for the journey is now at an end.
Be still, for the journey is over.

A herald has come to us with news that they draw near,
A bearer of good tidings has come to us, announcing their approach,
and tomorrow our home will reunite us with the beloved.”
And tomorrow the dwellings will reunite us with the beloved.
