أَسُهادٌSleeplessness? وَأَدمُعٌand tears وَزَفيرُand sighing
أَسُهادٌ وَأَدمُعٌ وَزَفيرُ
بَعضُsome هَذاthis عَلىfor المُحبِّthe lover كَثيرُmuch
بَعضُ هَذا عَلى المُحبِّ كَثيرُ
Sleeplessness, tears, and sighing?
Sleeplessness, and tears, and sighing?
Even some of this is too much for a lover.

ماnot تَذَكَّرتُI recalled وَصلَunion with حُبّيَmy love إِلّاexcept that
ما تَذَكَّرتُ وَصلَ حُبّيَ إِلّا
كادَnearly قَلبيmy heart شَوقاًin longing إِلَيهِtoward him يَطيرُflies
كادَ قَلبي شَوقاً إِلَيهِ يَطيرُ
Whenever I recalled a time of union, my love,
Whenever I recalled union with my love,
my heart nearly took wing out of longing for it.
my heart nearly flew toward him in longing.
سَكَنوهُthey inhabited it وَأَودَعُوهُand they placed in it غَراماًpassion
سَكَنوهُ وَأَودَعُوهُ غَراماً
عَجَباًhow wondrous! فيهِwithin it جَنَّةٌparadise وَسَعيرُand blazing fire
عَجَباً فيهِ جَنَّةٌ وَسَعيرُ
They made it their dwelling and lodged consuming passion within it—
They inhabited it and placed passion within it;
what a marvel: within it are Paradise and Hellfire.
How wondrous—in it are paradise and blazing fire!
