أعاذِلَ ذَرني وَاِنفِرادي عَن الوَرى

أعاذِلَ ذَرني وَاِنفِرادي عَن الوَرى

فَلَستُ أَرى فيهم صَديقاً مصافِيا

فَلَستُ أَرى فيهم صَديقاً مصافِيا

O reproacher, leave me to my solitude apart from humankind.

Leave me be in my solitude apart from people,

For I see among them no sincere friend.

For I see not amongst them a true loyal friend.

نَداماي كُتبٌ أَستفيدُ علومَها

نَداماي كُتبٌ أَستفيدُ علومَها

أَحبّايَ تُغني عَن لِقائي الأَعادِيا

أَحبّايَ تُغني عَن لِقائي الأَعادِيا

My boon companions are books whose knowledge I gain,

My books are my regretful comrades from whom

my beloved ones, who spare me encounters with enemies.

I gain knowledge, and my loved ones entertain me against meeting enemies.

وَآنَسُها القُرآنُ فَهوَ الَّذي بِهِ

وَآنَسُها القُرآنُ فَهوَ الَّذي بِهِ

نَجاتي إِذا فَكَّرتُ أَو كُنتُ تالِيا

نَجاتي إِذا فَكَّرتُ أَو كُنتُ تالِيا

And the most comforting of them is the Qur’an, for through it

The Quran accompanies them, it is that by which

comes my salvation, when I reflect or recite.

I am saved when I contemplate or recite.

لَقَد جُلتُ في غَربِ البِلادِ وَشَرقِها

لَقَد جُلتُ في غَربِ البِلادِ وَشَرقِها

أُنَقِّبُ عَمن كانَ لِلّهِ داعِيا

أُنَقِّبُ عَمن كانَ لِلّهِ داعِيا

Indeed, I roamed through the lands, west and east,

I have wandered in the east and west of the country,

searching for someone who called others to God.

Seeking who was for God a caller.

فَلم أَرَ إِلا طالِباً لرياسةٍ

فَلم أَرَ إِلا طالِباً لرياسةٍ

وَجمّاعَ أَموالٍ وَشَيخاً مرائِيا

وَجمّاعَ أَموالٍ وَشَيخاً مرائِيا

But I saw only a seeker of leadership,

But I saw only one seeking leadership,

and a hoarder of wealth, and a sheikh making a show of piety.

And a group gathering wealth, and a pretentious elder.

قبَضتُ يَدي عَنهُم وَآثرتُ عُزلةً

قبَضتُ يَدي عَنهُم وَآثرتُ عُزلةً

عَن الناسِ وَاستغنيت بِاللَهِ كافِيا

عَن الناسِ وَاستغنيت بِاللَهِ كافِيا

I withdrew my hand from them and chose seclusion

I folded my hand from them, and chose isolation,

from people, and found God sufficient for me.

From the people, self-sufficient with God as enough.
