أَياO ناصرَNasir (defender of) الدينِal-Din (the faith) الَّذيwho عَمَّencompassed all فَضلُهُhis bounty
وَقَدand indeed شَمَلَتناembraced us بِالنَوالِwith bounty شَمائِلُهhis noble traits
O Nasir al-Din, whose bounty embraces all,
and whose noble traits have enfolded us in generosity.
تَبسَّمَsmiled هَذاthis القطرُland إِذwhen أَنتَyou حاضِرٌpresent
بِهِin it وَجَرىand flowed سَلسالُهits sweet waters وَجداولُهand its streams
This land smiled when you were present
within it, and its sweet waters and streams flowed.
ففيso in كُلِّevery رَوضٍgarden مِنهُof it عَينٌan eye قَريرةٌcontented
وَفيand in كُلِّevery زَهرٍblossom مِنهُof it زَهرٌa bloom تُشاكِلُهyou resemble it
So in each of its gardens is a contented eye,
and in each of its blossoms is a bloom that you resemble.
يُنافِسُنيvies with me فيكfor you الزَمانُtime حسادةout of envy
إِذاwhen رُمتُI sought لُقياكmeeting you اِستَمَرّتpersisted شَوغِلُهits distractions
Time vies with me for you, out of envy;
whenever I seek to meet you, its distractions persist.
وَليand I have زَمَنٌa period of time لَمnot أُبصِرَI see السيِّدَthe lord الَّذيwho
إِذاif لَمnot نَزُرهُwe visit him زارَناvisited us مِنهُfrom him نائِلُهhis bounty
And it has been some time since I saw the lord who,
if we do not visit him, has bounty that comes from him to visit us.
كَريمٌa generous man قَصَدناهُwe sought him لِدَفعِto ward off مُلِمَّةٍa calamity
مِنfrom الدَهرِfate فانثالَتand poured down عَلَيناupon us فَواضِلُهhis favors
A generous man—we sought him to ward off a calamity
from fate, and his favors poured down upon us.
فَمِنso from جودِهِhis generosity فيon كُلِّevery جِيدٍneck قَلائِدٌnecklaces
بِهاwith them يَزدَهيit glories حُسناًin beauty عَلىabove مَنwhoever يُطاوِلُهrivals it
So from his generosity there are necklaces on every neck,
with which it glories in beauty above whoever rivals it.
وَماand not الفَخرُglory إِلاexcept ماwhat يروِّضُcultivates فكرُهُhis mind
وَلاand not الهَجرُestrangement إِلاexcept ماwhat تَفِيضُpour forth أَنامِلُهhis fingertips
And glory is nothing but what his mind cultivates,
and estrangement is nothing but what his fingertips pour forth.
وَجاورَand dwelt beside هَذاthis النِيلَNile نَيلُthe bounty of بنانِهِhis fingertips
وَرامَand sought مُضاهاةًrivalry لِمَنwith one whom لاnot يُماثِلُهit equals him
And the bounty of his fingertips dwelt beside this Nile,
and the Nile sought to rival one it cannot equal.
وَأَنّىand how يُضاهيcan rival واحدٌone عشرَten أَنمُلٍfingertips
تُمَدُّare replenished مِنfrom البَحرِthe ocean الخِضَمِّvast نَوافِلُهhis gifts
And how can one rival ten fingertips,
whose gifts are replenished from the vast ocean?
