ياO قاسيَhard القَلبِof heart لَيسَis not اللَفظُspeech مَطمَعَهُhis desire
ساجيlanguid الجُفونِof eyelids حَنينَtender اللَحظِof glance راحمَهُone who pities him
O hard-hearted one—words are not what he craves—
O heartless one, sweet words are not his goal
Languid-lidded, tender of glance, you who pity him,
O slumbering eyelids, pity his yearning soul
أَماwill ... not? تَرِقُّyou feel compassion لِصَبٍّfor a lovesick lover فيكover you مُكتَئِبٍdejected
عفٍّchaste غَداhas become صادِقاًsincere فيin الودِّlove كاتِمَهُconcealing it
Will you not pity a lover grieving over you,
Does not a loyal youth in you stir compassion
Chaste, who has become sincere in love while concealing it?
Whose affection tomorrow will honestly fashion
أَشبَهتَyou resemble يوسُفَJoseph حُسناin beauty وَالمُحبُّand the lover لَهُfor him

You resemble Joseph in beauty, and the lover has
You resemble Joseph in beauty, and lover of yours
Seven harsh years, in which he defied his reproacher.
Is imprisoned, though guiltless, in pitiless towers
يَلومُهُhe reproaches him لَيسَdoes not يَدريhe knows منwhom يَهيمُhe is infatuated بِهِwith him
لَكنbut يَراهُhe sees him حَزينَsorrowful القَلبِof heart هائِمَهُdistraught in it (the heart)
He reproaches him, not knowing whom he loves so madly,
They blame him, not knowing who makes him despair
But sees him sorrowful and distraught at heart.
Only seeing him gloomy and filled with dark care
كَفاهُit suffices him مِنكَfrom you وِصالاًas union أَنthat تُكالِمَهُyou converse with him
وَأَنand that يَراكَhe sees you وَإِنand even if أصبَحتَyou have become كالِمَهُone who wounds him
For union with you, it is enough for him that you speak with him,
To be spoken to by you is the joy he'd implore
And that he see you, even if you now wound him.
Just to see you, though you say to him nothing more
