أَباO Abu الفَضلal-Fadl كَمhow much هَذاthis التَجنّيunjust treatment وَإِنَّماand only
أَبا الفَضل كَم هَذا التَجنّي وَإِنَّما
يَليقُis fitting بِغِرٍّfor a guileless one خائِفِfearful of القَنصِthe hunt نافِرِskittish
يَليقُ بِغِرٍّ خائِفِ القَنصِ نافِرِ
O Abu al-Fadl, why all this unjust treatment? It only
befits a guileless creature, fearful of the hunt and skittish.
وَأَنتَand you بِقَلبيin my heart لاnot تَزولُdepart وَإِنَّماand only
وَأَنتَ بِقَلبي لا تَزولُ وَإِنَّما
يَفوتُis lost لِعَينِيto my eye مِنكَfrom you لَذَّةُpleasure ناظِرِof one who gazes
يَفوتُ لِعَينِي مِنكَ لَذَّةُ ناظِرِ
And you are in my heart, never departing; only
my eye misses the pleasure of gazing upon you.
وَكُنتُand I was وَمِنand among حاليmy circumstances تَأَنُّسُfamiliar ease واصِلٍof one who maintains ties
وَكُنتُ وَمِن حالي تَأَنُّسُ واصِلٍ
وَصِرتُand I became وَمِنand among حاليmy circumstances توحُّشُloneliness هاجِرِof one who withdraws
وَصِرتُ وَمِن حالي توحُّشُ هاجِرِ
And once my state was the ease of one who kept close ties;
and now it is the loneliness of one who has withdrawn.
تَدارَكremedy حَبيبيmy beloved خَلَّةًa need قَدalready أَضَعتُهاI have neglected it
تَدارَك حَبيبي خَلَّةً قَد أَضَعتُها
وَزُرنيand visit me وَلَوand even if بِالطَيفِthrough a dream-vision خَطفَةَa fleeting moment زائِرِof a visitor
وَزُرني وَلَو بِالطَيفِ خَطفَةَ زائِرِ
Remedy, my beloved, a need I have neglected,
and visit me, if only in a dream, for a fleeting visit.
وَإِنand if لَمnot تَزُرyou visit شَخصاًin person فَأُنسٌthen comfort بِأَحرُفٍin letters
وَإِن لَم تَزُر شَخصاً فَأُنسٌ بِأَحرُفٍ
عَلىon وَرَقٍpaper يَقنَعis content بِذلِكَwith that خاطِريmy heart
عَلى وَرَقٍ يَقنَع بِذلِكَ خاطِري
And if you do not visit in person, there is comfort in letters
on paper; with that my heart is content.
