وَخَلَّفت بِفُؤادي الهمَّ وَالحزنا
Nuḍār is gone; no life can now delight us,
Nudar is gone, so life holds no sweetness for us,
leaving sorrow and grief within my heart.
and she has left anxiety and sorrow in my heart.
فَماso no عَرَتbefell مُهجَتيmy soul حالٌstate تسرُّit is gladdened بِهاby it

وَلاnor رَأَتsaw مُقلَتيmy eye مِنfrom بَعدِهاafter her حَسَناanything beautiful
وَلا رَأَت مُقلَتي مِن بَعدِها حَسَنا
No state has befallen my soul in which it can rejoice,
So no state has come upon my soul in which it finds joy,
nor has my eye seen beauty since she departed.
nor has my eye seen anything lovely since she left.

فَتُنعِشُthus she enlivens الأَشرفينِthe two noblest العَينthe eye وَالأُذُناand the ear
فَتُنعِشُ الأَشرفينِ العَين وَالأُذُنا
Nuḍār was the spirit by which we lived,
Nudar was our soul, through whom we lived,
reviving the two noblest senses: eye and ear.
thus enlivening the two noblest senses, the eye and the ear.

وَالطَرفُ مِن لَحظِها بِالحُسنِ قَد فُتِنا
The ear, hearing her words, would gather pearls,
Thus hearing gathered pearls from her words,
and the eye, looking upon her, was captivated by beauty.
and sight was bewitched by the beauty of her glance.
