وَضَنىًand languor بِجفنِكَin your eyelid أَمor كُؤوسgoblets عُقارِof heady wine
Is that light on your cheek, or a blazing fire?
And is that languor in your eyelid, or goblets of heady wine?

And is that fragrance in your saliva, or the wafting scent of musk?
And is that radiance at your mouth, or the light of brilliant stars?

The qualities of beauty were gathered in you, and became
A fetter for hearts and a temptation to the eyes.

He is reserved and bashful; when you speak to him,
He lowers his gaze in shyness, in dignified stillness.
فيon وَجهِهِhis face زَهراتُblossoms رَوضٍof a garden تُجتلىare beheld
مِنof نَرجسnarcissus مَعwith وَردةٍa rose وَبَهارِand oxeye flowers
On his face, the blossoms of a garden are seen:
Narcissus, with a rose and oxeye flowers.

فَأدارَso he set around مِنof آسٍmyrtle سياجَa hedge عِذارِof cheek-down
He feared the roses would be plucked from his cheeks,
So he ringed them with a myrtle hedge of cheek-down.
وَتسللتand crept نَملthe ants العِذارِof the cheek-down بِخدِّهacross his cheek
ليرِدنَso they might come to drink شَهدةَthe honeycomb ريقِهِof his saliva المعطارِfragrant
And the ants of his cheek-down crept across his cheek,
To drink from the honeycomb of his fragrant saliva.

فَوقَفنَso they halted بَينَbetween الوِردcoming to drink وَالإِصدارِand being turned away
But roses on his cheek barred them from their drink,
So they halted between coming to drink and being turned away.
كَمhow long ذاthis أَواريI conceal فيin هَواهlove for him مَحَبتيmy love
وَلَقَدand indeed وَشىbetrayed بيme فيهِconcerning him فَرطُthe excess أواريof my burning ardor
How long shall I conceal the love I bear him?
Yet the excess of my burning ardor has surely given away my love for him.
