Is it your face, or a radiant full moon shining forth?

And your fragrance, or unsealed musk spreading its perfume?

And your flank, or a supple shoot of the bān tree?

And your buttocks, or a loosely heaped sand mound quivering?

Charms whose like has never been gathered in anyone but you—

Youth and dazzling beauty that steals away reason.

I let my eyes roam among the beautiful, but never did

My eyes see anyone more splendid in beauty or more radiant than you.

He is bashful; when I speak with him, his cheek almost

Flushes crimson from the intense shyness within him.

I complained to him of the burning anguish in my heart

And my longing; he grew abashed with shyness and stammered.

He saw my figure wasted, and my speech faint,

And my tears streaming, and my senses already still.

So he visited without a promise, in the night's darkness; I suppose he

Watched for a lapse of attention among his guards, and came.

So never have I seen a master like him visit a slave,

Nor have I seen anyone like me attain what he had hoped for.

I was alone with him, while Time had lowered its gaze,

And the one who opened hope had shut the door of fear.

So I embraced him—a supple, verdant branch—

And wooed him—a gazelle fawn with wide, dark eyes and brilliant whites.

And night draws its darkness from those tresses,

And dawn draws from his cheeks a light shining forth.

So, for anyone who finds a union of two opposites impossible:

Here, then, is my beloved, uniting light and darkness.
