    Is it Eden's garden, whose houris have appeared to me,

    or the blue tent, whose full moons have shone forth,

    or the drowsy eye visiting its beloved,

    then, when it returned awake, its illusion became clear?

    We were bewitched by gazelles that summon ardent longing,

    serene of glance, whose languor has taken us captive.

    Tame creatures, they left their covert and became

    skittish, inaccessible to whoever visits them.

    ثَمِلنا بِها لَكن عَدانا سُرورُها

    From their eyes they pass around cups of wine;

    we grew drunk on it, but its joy passed us by.

    And with their lashes they set snares of seduction,

    with which lions are caught, their roaring loud.

    And they unveiled faces like rising suns,

    with wide eyes whose shy aversion is unyielding.

    And grant that boughs on the dunes resemble her figure—

    how could they have her tresses hanging loose upon them?

    إِلى كَعبِها يَنجرُّ مِنها صَغيرها

    They wrapped themselves in flowing darkness of luxuriant hair;

    its shortest strand trails from her down to her ankle.

    So whoever travels behind her by night is lost in darkness; whoever

    walks ahead is guided by her light.

    And they outshine all the luminaries with a radiant brow,

    its light and unveiled splendor sparkling forth.

    فَتنهِضُها ظَمأى خِفافاً خُصورُها

    Their lush, heavy hips keep them seated;

    their thirsty, light waists lift them up.

    She bares her mouth's pearls and pours them forth

    as a honeycomb's yield, which the arak twig now gathers.

    O gazelle of the wilderness, tell me by what trick

    you contrived to borrow her eye.

    And O diver's pearl, you grew more beautiful

    to the eye when their mouths resembled you.

    And O twin ivory caskets, adorned in a robe,

    when did their bosoms permit a breast to be carved?

    كَذا الرِدفُ يَأَبى مَسَّ وَشيٍ ظُهورُها

    Her breast keeps brocade from touching her body;

    likewise, their rumps keep brocade from touching their backs.

    كَذَلِكَ حُبُّ الغانياتِ يُثِيرُها

    They stirred in my heart anguish after anguish;

    thus does love of beautiful women arouse it.
