Indeed, the soul has realms to roam in sleep,

A creation of the All-Powerful, the Wise—exalted is He.

It is a soul whose darkness is unceasing,

And a spirit whose lights gleam.

So the two are one, yet two in description:

Women and men within a bodily frame.

God has placed the power of reason within it,

So in sleep it sees forms.

While a person sleeps in one place,

It traverses the earth, its plains and mountains.

Between a vision that comes like dawn's radiance,

And another vision that comes as a phantom.

So it journeys by night between heights and depths,

Yet in the jar it seeks no change of place.

It remained joined to its jar for a time; then, when

It left it unwillingly, it refused reunion.

And it has soared toward everlasting life,

While its jar has turned to dust.

God will restore a soul to a body,

Soon bringing union between this and that.

And the philosopher claimed—and he is a habitual liar—

That the return of bodies has become impossible.

And restoration and first creation are alike

For my Lord, and restoration is easier.

All that the God of created beings wills

To exist shall exist, without fail.

And people's disagreement over the soul is ignorance,

Which only leads the persistent inquirer further astray.

It is a creation, and no created being knows

Its essence; it is indeed wondrous in action.

And a philosopher claimed to know it,

With words that misled the ignorant.

And he claimed that it is eternal in essence,

As eternal as the Lord—exalted is my Lord in majesty!
