أَرىI see كُلَّevery عُضوٍorgan فيin الفَتىthe young man نافِعاًuseful لَهُto him
أَرى كُلَّ عُضوٍ في الفَتى نافِعاً لَهُ
سِوىexcept واحدone فيهِwithin him جَلوبconstantly bringing لَهُto him الضرّاharm
سِوى واحد فيهِ جَلوب لَهُ الضرّا
I see every member in a man as useful to him,
I see every organ in a young man as useful to him,
save one within him that has brought him misery.
except one within him that constantly brings him harm.
فَأَقبِحso how vile بِهِit (exclamatory) عُضواًas an organ يولِّدُbegetting أَفرُخاًchicks (offspring)
فَأَقبِح بِهِ عُضواً يولِّدُ أَفرُخاً
وَيُكسِبُهُand brings him ذُلاًhumiliation وَيُعقِبُهُand leaves him with فَقراpoverty
وَيُكسِبُهُ ذُلاً وَيُعقِبُهُ فَقرا
How loathsome a member it is, begetting chicks,
So how vile an organ it is, begetting chicks,
earning him humiliation and leaving him in poverty.
and bringing him humiliation and leaving him in poverty.
وَلَوand if أَنَّهُthat he يُكفاهُwere spared it عاشَwould live مُمَتَّعاًin enjoyment
وَلَو أَنَّهُ يُكفاهُ عاشَ مُمَتَّعاً
بِدُنياهُof his worldly life مَرجُوّاًhoped for لَهُfor him الفَوزُsuccess فيin الأخرىthe hereafter
بِدُنياهُ مَرجُوّاً لَهُ الفَوزُ في الأخرى
And if only he were spared it, he would live, taking his pleasure
And were he spared it, he would live in enjoyment
in this world, with triumph in the Hereafter hoped for him.
of his worldly life, with success in the hereafter hoped for him.
