I kept to my solitude when I severed the ties,

And kept company with the congenial friend within myself.

And my thought comforted me, since I was far from humankind,

So I long for nothing but knowledge.

I see my wakefulness reveal subtleties of wisdom,

And in my slumber, late at night, I watch the lightning flashes.

Flashes in pages of learning that I behold,

Directly witnessing through them the subtle meanings.

Thus I stroll proudly in their lovely gardens,

And pluck their flowers, radiant and exquisite.

When the minds of some people balk at what

They undertake, my mind is already ahead in it.

And if they drink fouled water because their minds are clouded,

I myself drink pure water, clear to the eye.

And I assay what they have counterfeited in their speech,

As though my mind then held assaying crucibles.

And whoever is granted understanding of the Qur'an will surely

    Open its locks through intelligence.

You see the air laden with their scent as it grows fragrant.

And with sound thought he perceives subtleties

Through which you see the wording match the meaning.

And with repetition he finds ever greater delight in it,

As when you chew a honeyed morsel of true sweetness.

The Book of God is my protector by day, and indeed it is

My constant recitation when night grows deeply dark.

A Book He revealed in the Arabs' tongue, proceeding

Along their path, never straying from their ways.

And whoever keeps the Qur'an before his eyes

Attains the best of what he hopes for and is safe from calamities.

I see people divided, some opposing

Others, each imagining that truth speaks from his mouth.

    وَلَو أَدرَكوا لَم يُبصِروا فيهِ فارِقا

    And they have differed only because their understanding falls short;

Had they understood, they would have seen no division in it.

And its key, truly, is grammar; so strive

To master it, if you love knowledge.

    فَأَقلِل وَأَكثِر وَاصِلاً أَو مُفارِقا

    A young man's understanding accords with his mastery of it;

So acquire little or much, drawing close or keeping apart.

And cast off imitation of men, for only

One who is foolish and witless imitates them.

And do not turn away from the Kashshaf of the shaykh of Zamakhshar,

And with it reveal a wonder to the seeker of miracles.

His blazing mind became the one to open it.

He clothed it in garments of exquisite wording,

So it trailed lofty trains in pride.

    وَلَولا اعتيادُ السبحِ قَد كانَ غارِقا

    Indeed, he dived into a sea and brought forth jewels;

And had he not been practiced in swimming, he would certainly have drowned.

So it brought him the fugitive that had refused to be led.

Veiled secrets that emerged as truths.

Yet there is scope in it for a critic,

And grievous slips that have gripped throats.

And attributes to the infallible one what does not befit him.

Especially since they drove him into narrow straits.

By multiplying words called bombastic tirades.

And he was a lover of oratory, deeply enamored.

So it does not accord with what they have constructed.

And he credits himself with revealing meanings,

To mislead the inexperienced, though he is a thief.

And he errs in understanding the Qur'an, because he

Permits a grammatical parsing that refuses to fit.

And how vast is the gulf between one granted eloquence by nature

And another who labored over it, yet does not catch up.

And he uses guile with words until he turns them

Toward an evil doctrine in which he has become a renegade.

Alas for his ruin—a shaykh whose fame has swept through

West and east, as the east wind sweeps through them.

If mercy from God does not come to his rescue,

He will surely be seen as a companion to the unbelievers.
