ماhow أَحسَنَbeautiful ماthe way يَقراreads حَبيبيَmy beloved شِعريmy poetry
فيهِabout him غَزلاًlove verse وَسامِعand a listener لاnot يَدريknows
How beautifully my beloved reads my poetry,
Love verse about him, while a listener is unaware.
يَدريknows قَمَريmy moon بِأَنَّthat فيهِin it دُرَراًpearls
لاقىfound دُرَراًpearls مُستخرجاextracting مِنfrom بَحرِa sea
My moon knows that it contains pearls;
He found pearls, drawing them from a sea.
بَحرٌa sea مَدَدٌsustenance لَهُfor it ذَكاءٌintelligence خُلِقاwas fashioned
حَتّىto the point that لَحَسِبتُI surely thought فِكرَهُhis thought مِنfrom جَمرِembers
A sea fed by an intelligence so fashioned
That I surely thought his mind was made of embers.
لِلخَدof the cheek فَأخالُso I imagine جَمرهُhis embers لاnot يَسرِيspread
Blazing embers that coursed through veils
Of the cheek; I fancy his embers do not spread.
يَسرِيspread لِشَجٍto a grieving man فُؤادُهُhis heart فيin حَرقٍburning
قَدalready ذابَmelted أَسىًwith grief مِنbecause of ساكِنٍone dwelling فيin القَصرِthe palace
They spread to a grieving man whose heart is aflame,
Already melted with grief for one dwelling in the palace.
قَصرٌa palace لِرَشاًfor a gazelle-fawn كَأَنَّماas though طَلعتُهُhis visage
مِنfrom شَمسِthe sun ضُحىًforenoon أَوor وجهُهُhis face مِنfrom بَدرِa full moon
A palace for a gazelle-fawn, as though his visage
Were from the forenoon sun, or his face from a full moon.
بَدرٌa full moon وَعَلَتهُand rose above him ظُلَّةٌa canopy مِنof شَعَرٍhair
يَهتَزُّsways نَقاًa sand dune مِنfrom تَحتِbeneath غُصنٍa bough نَضرِverdant
A full moon, and above him rose a canopy of hair;
A sand dune sways beneath a verdant bough.
نَضرٌverdant وَشَكاand complained مِنof رِدفِهِhis rump مِنof ثِقَلٍa weight
فيهِin it وَكَأَنَّand as though رِدفَهُhis rump مِنof صَخرِrock
Verdant, and it complained of his rump, of a weight
Within it, as though his rump were made of rock.
صَخرٌrock كَفُؤادِlike the heart of مَنthe one هَويناwe loved شَغَفاًwith passion
فَيهِfor him فَلَقَدso indeed أَودىperished بِهِbecause of him ليfor me صَبرِيmy patience
Rock, like the heart of the one we loved with passion
For him—because of him my patience has indeed perished.
صَبرٌpatience صَبرٌbitter aloes مَتىwhen يُجَرَّعis administered صَبرٌbitter aloes
جِسماًa body دَنِفاًailing فَحيَّهلthen hasten! لِلقَبرِto the grave
Patience is bitter aloes; when aloes is administered
To an ailing body, then on to the grave!
